Spargel is Germany's pure white asparagus. At €11.90/kg, it's not a cheap vegetable. They are larger in diameter and length and have a milder, sweeter flavor than their green American counterparts. They also take up more room on the grill than the brats. Dan was wondering who was coming over to dinner to eat all this spargel? This time of year, sheds selling spargel crop up around the city. Last year I was fooled into believing some of them were ice cream stands since they paradoxically had a large strawberry on top. This year the sheds have been redesigned, without the confusing strawberry.Gianna enjoyed the spargel so much at dinner, that she ordered a spargel sundae for dessert at Eis Olympio. That's vanilla and pistachio ice cream spargel topped with kiwi and tropical sauce, plenty of sahne, half a peach, and toasted nuts.
We have the white asparagus here too but it's something like $20 a kilo or more. I love asparagus but have not mastered cooking it yet and at that price I can't afford a mistake :(
ReplyDeleteI first tried grilling it on Easter with some cheaper supermarket spargel. Our guest said it was a winner. In fact the whole family liked it. It grills up quite nicely with a little butter or olive oil to keep it from sticking. Also, they have thin skins like peppers that you may prefer to remove after grilling.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the Germans are fans of making ice cream look like other food. Like the spaghetti ice cream and the spargel shown here. Are there other ones that you have seen? You don't really see that in the US.

Making ice cream look like other food is an obsession! But it's probably the Italians running the shops that should get the credit (?) They make lasagna, spaghetti (+/- bolognese), pommes frittes (french fries), rumpsteak, bratwurst, and more. Sometime before we leave, I want to get the rumpsteak. It's a slab of chocolate ice cream and the gravy looks like caramel sauce :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope you mean that the caramel sauce looks like gravy!!

LOL, yeah, that's what I meant, Anonymous who is my brother-in-law! But you never know what sauce they are putting on there. What looks like caramel could very well be gravy flavored X-P
